Overcome - Looking Forward to Collyde 2014
I am eagerly looking forward to the Collyde Summit taking place on September 19 & 20. For the last couple of years Collyde has been the place where we have been inspired to take chances, takes leaps of faith and trust in what the Lord has to offer us. In many ways we are a Collyde Summit success story - one of many I am sure. It couldn't be otherwise - imagine what is possible when hundreds of people get together, listen, learn, pray, worship and explore together. Anything is possible.
Two years ago Laurie and I attended the summit almost on a whim. We had nothing to do and decided to go - we had zero expectation. Let's just say that 'whim' was for us the gentle whisper that Elijah heard on Mount Horeb. It was the soft voice among the loud, violent storms raging in our lives at the time.
The speakers we heard really helped solidify for us a hot idea that had been brewing in the backs of our minds for a while. It was the soft gentle voice of God leading us and we tentatively listened. We knew that we wanted to do something that would make a difference, change lives, feed the hungry, help the most vulnerable, educate the poor. We had been making hot sauce and giving it away for six years at that time. It's great hot sauce, people wanted to buy it - why not use it to accomplish our primary goal of changing the world?
In James 2 we are exhorted to live out our faith. Can faith alone save us? Sure, but without deeds it's not doing much for anyone else. Thus Hot Sauce 4 Good was born.
It wasn't for another full year and another Collyde Summit that our newborn enterprise started to take shape. Check out these posts on our experiences last year. Sometimes the voice of God comes in a gentle whisper while other times it is a mighty wind. Collyde 2013 was a mighty wind.
At last year's summit we established a relationship with World Vision Micro, was inspired by Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee, energized by Pete Wilson and so many others. The year that followed has been blessed in countless ways.
1. World Vision Micro - we absolutely love what they do, why and how they do it. We were honored to be able to travel with them to Ethiopia this year to meet some incredible entrepreneurs who have taken microloans. Philanthropy at its finest. Want to meet them too? Check out these videos - each is only about 2 minutes long. You can see them in the Leadercast video as well.
2. Leadercast - a one-day leadership conference in Atlanta, GA that is simulcast to 130,000 people worldwide. We got to tell the Hot Sauce 4 Good story and represent World Vision Micro and their incredible work. Here's a short video that tells a little bit about our story.
3. Hot Sauce 4 Good - Full Time. That's right. I am following, trusting and working tirelessly to change the world with hot sauce. Crazy? Maybe.
4. Family - doing this with family has been incredibly rewarding.
What is next for us? Stop by and see us at the Collyde Summit on September 19 & 20. This year's theme is Overcome. I couldn't think of a better one!
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. ~James 2: 14-17
